REWORDING
Writers also used clues of punctuation such as
punctuation marks (to show that the word has a
special meaning), dashes, brackets (enclosing a
definition), parentheses and italics (showing the
word will be defined).
It may also comes with linking words such as
(or, that is, in other word).
The meaning of the word is always in between
the punctuation marks.
EXAMPLE:
1. Punctuation marks
My father is a haberdasher (men's shop
keeper) in Ipoh.
HABERDASHER = MEN'S SHOP KEEPER
Clue: The meaning is stated in the
brackets.
2. Linking words
Ahmad is disconsolate, in other words,
extremely sad after knowing that his best
friend betrayed him.
DISCONSOLATE = EXTREMELY SAD
Clue: "...his best friend betrayed him..."
