LEADER’S TALK

Team building to drive HSE objectives
HSE objectives of an organisation can be best fulfilled by teamwork, i.e. collaborative approach
between individuals to achieve a common safety goal. Although from safety risk point of view , works
at project sites , due to it's very nature are most critical , I would like to expand the concept of team
work for driving safety objectives to cover wider areas e.g :
- Designers to ensure that product / component designs are safe for the duty these are required to
perform
-Manufacturers need to ensure that products are manufactured according to established practices
and subjected / cleared as per test plans
-Packing Transport and unloading at site to be done in safe manner
-After reaching site, if there is time gap between receipt of material and installation, it should be
ensured that material is stored properly and during storage character of products is not changed to be
unsafe in any manner
- Movement of material within site to be done in safe manner
-During erection of the components required care to be taken to avoid any unsafe situation
-Finally, during start operation all cares should be taken to run the plants in safe manners
From the above it can be said that safety will depend upon collaborative effort of Designers, Planners,
Workers, Quality assurance/Inspection personnel, Safety Officers and Project Mangers. Any failure /
oversight at any stage will impede fulfilment of safety objectives and may result in major accidents.
Overall safety will require contribution from areas including the following:
-Design Offices (Own as well as Subcontracted work)
-Manufacturing Works where components are manufactured/assembled
-Installation sites where final installation and commissioning is achieved
A good organisation needs to have effective team to cover all above areas and ensure proper
communication among various individuals working in different areas. This team should be led by an
effective leader, who can give required direction and motivate the team to work in tandem to achieve
organisation's safety objectives.
