The brain then motivates the person to continue using to illicit the same
results. Ongoing use of a drug causes the brain to adapt, reducing the
effects on the "reward center". A tolerance of the drug is then built,
pushing the person to desire more. As the brain adapts, a person is less
likely to want things they once enjoyed or need. Drug use also influences
learning, decision making, judgement, stress management, memory, and
behavior.
Types of drugs commonly abused:
• Alcohol
• Cocaine
• Marijuana
• Opioids
• Steroids
• Over the counter and prescription medications
Recognizing unhealthy drug use
Signs and symptoms of drug abuse can vary according to the drug, but
some common changes that may be noted include-
Problems at work or school
Physical signs such as lack of energy or motivation, weight loss or
gain, abnormal gait, incoherent speech, red eyes, or neglected
appearance
Changes in behavior
Sudden requests for money without a reasonable explanation
Drug addiction can be treated, but it requires a personal desire to take the
steps towards recovery. Recovery warrants ongoing management, such as
avoidance and attending group sessions focused on recovery. Support
from family, friends, physicians, and organized treatment groups may be
necessary to overcome the addiction and stay drug free.
