In 2015, Tennessee deleted the requirement that a supervising
physician for a PA have complete and absolute authority over
the PA’s actions. However, it retained the current law that makes
clear the PA functions under the control and responsibility of the
physician.

Scope of Practice
As the leader of the team, your goal is to delegate to other
team members’ highest level of competence. To accomplish
this safely, only delegate on the basis of appropriate scope
of practice based on training, experience, and demonstrated
current competence. Many patients choose the APP over the
physician for primary care, as the wait time for an appointment
is often shorter and the APP may be able to spend more time
counseling the patient on preventive care. Quality of care is
enhanced by collegial relationships characterized by mutual
respect and trust; professional responsibility and accountability;
and supportive team-based care with physicians readily
available to collaborate depending on the needs of their
patients.
All physicians and advanced practitioners should be held to
the same standards for the provision of quality patient care
for which they are credentialed. In most states, prearranged,
