SVMIC Advanced Practice Provider Collaboration: Assessing the Risk
collaborative relationships must be established to ensure
ongoing consultations and to cover emergencies. These are
often found on the board website or in applications and can be
“collaborative agreements”, “protocols”, “prescriptive formularies”,
or other required forms attesting to the relationship. APPs
have a scope of practice defined in the state practice act, but
generally may provide medical services that are delegated by
the supervising physician within the APP’s education, training
and experience.
Autonomously and in collaboration with healthcare
professionals and other individuals, NPs provide a full range of
primary, acute, and specialty healthcare services, including:
22
• Ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostic tests
such as lab work and x-rays
• Diagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions such
as diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, and injuries
• Prescribing medications and other treatments
• Managing patients’ overall care
• Counseling
• Educating patients on disease prevention and positive
health and lifestyle choices
Depending on the scope of practice and state of licensure, there
may be additional regulatory or compliance requirements to be
met. Examples that may trigger additional requirements include:
• Prescribing (may have additional DEA and FDA
regulations)
