SVMIC Risk Basics: Surgical Practice
that is used is of significant importance after the patient can no
longer respond to questions about the operative site.
To prevent these errors, the Joint Commission Center for
Transforming Healthcare offers a safe-surgery toolkit packed
with data from multiple national participating institutions and
organizations, with charts that can be found in the resources.
Postoperative
Infection Control
Each practice should ensure that precautions are taken to
protect patients, visitors, and personnel from infection. Policies
and procedures must be developed and stringently followed.
An infection control program should be based on current
guidelines and recommendations from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration (OSHA).
Ongoing educational programs that encompass appropriate
aspects of infection control should be implemented, reinforced,
and evaluated on a regular basis.
Additional information related to infection control can be found
in SVMIC’s Physician Office Resource Manual, available at
www.svmic.com, or in the “Guide to Infection Prevention for
Outpatient Settings: Minimum Expectations for Safe Care” on
the CDC website.
