While good documentation and communication can greatly assist

in defending a provider at trial, they can often prevent a claim or
lawsuit from being asserted in the first place. Conversely,

erroneous or incomplete documentation and communication can
often be the linchpin that supports the plaintiff’s theory of liability.

As discussed previously, electronic media has created additional

risks and potential pitfalls associated with documentation and
                   communication issues.

This course is not intended to be a comprehensive tutorial on
HIPAA or privacy laws. However, in order to provide an accurate

discussion of the risks and potential pitfalls associated with

electronic media, it will be necessary to discuss certain aspects of
HIPAA, primarily the Security Rule and the Privacy Rule.
