The Gombong Mountain
Coffee Story
Our signature product, Gombong Mountain coffee is produced on a 360 hectare mountain
top in West Java, called, obviously Gombong Mountain (Gunung Gombong in Indonesian).
The land is owned cooperatively by the farmers and their families who have lived there all
their lives. Gombong is remote, access is by narrow dirt roads, and the drive from the
nearest city, Sukabumi, although only a few kilometers, can take 2 hours.
The farmers traditionally grew a range of vegetables on the fertile volcanic soil, and sent
them to the city market, managing to maintain a basic subsistence living for their families.
Three years ago we discussed with them to convert to coffee growing, which is a much
better crop, because it is a cash crop. They agreed, and in partnership with a local coffee
shop and coffee roaster, and with government assistance, we supplied over three hundred
thousand Arabica seedlings. See our nursery below, a few seedlings are required periodi-
cally to replace young trees damaged by animals or bugs.
Three years ago, the farmers cleared the land and planted the seedlings, and they had
their first (limited) harvest in 2020. The coffee is amazing, hand planted, hand grown, hand
weeded, hand-picked, handwashed, and sun dried.
Gombong Mountain pure Arabica is low caffeine (50% of normal Robusta) and has almost
no bitterness. When brewed there is an aroma of dark chocolate, with subtle flavour hints
of Apples, Cloves, Maple Syrup, with a long dark chocolatey lingering finish. The fruitiness
comes through with a delicate sourness, but this is not harsh. Made in an espresso
machine or a filter system Gombong Mountain Arabica gives a smooth and mild coffee
with plenty of coffee-ness. Gombong Mountain makes the smoothest and creamiest
cappuccinos, again with plenty of coffee body but no bitterness.
