Winning Italian Greyhound “Bella” 1rst 1891 in Paris and 1rst 1894 in Bruxelles
Apparently, there had been no Afghan Hounds in France that P. Mahler could illustrate, it is
thought that the breed was imported into France towards the end of the 1930s, which would
have been towards the end of Mahler’s life. Nor are there any engravings or lithographs of the
Saluki.
However, Mahler did draw the Persian Sighthound as it was named then (in the 1920s, Saluki
and Persian Sighthound were considered different breeds in France, with different
standards). Mahler nevertheless gives us excellent engravings of Borzoi, Deerhound,
Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound, Italian Greyhound, Persian sighthound, Sloughi, Syrian
sighthound as well as of Crimean and Circassian sighthounds and of a Podenco type breed
named Charnigue.
Let the illustrations speak for themselves, they have after all survived two world wars in
France.
