Two different centres of domestication are proposed for the origin of the dog, or better,
part of the modern breeds. Chinese wolves also (Savolainen and co) and others.
But that is not all. The Nordic dog precursors have ancestors from the precursor types of
the grey wolf, but also from other wolves living today. These Nordic wolves are described
in the study as eastern progenitor types.
However, Bergström and his colleagues have also found that dogs in the Middle East and
Africa descended up to half of their ancestry from a specific population related to modern
southwest Eurasian wolves, indicating either an independent domestication process or
mixing with local wolves.
None of the ancient wolf genomes studied directly match any of these canine ancestors,
which means that the exact ancestral populations are still to be found [72].
