Thus we have genetically a separate ancestry from the Nordic dogs for the Basenji, the
Azawakh and the Sloughi, all named breeds according to the FCI standard.
These western dog precursors from the area of present-day Syria and Palestine
subsequently spread, for example, with the prehistoric spread of agriculture in western
Eurasia and the colonial spread of European dogs from the 19th century onwards.
We have already described the colonial spread of the dogs with regard to the
sighthounds, when it came to the differentiation of the Sloughi from the Saluki (Sloughi

We have already mentioned several times that the Sloughi, in addition to his duties as a
hunting dog, is also used as a protector of herds and of places of residence, whether as a
hut, tent or house. When he takes on these tasks, he needs a certain degree of defensive
capabilities, which he has already had to demonstrate in hunting. But he must also have
some form of affiliation to places of residence and the people belonging to them;
temporary changes of location among nomadic people must not be a problem.
