Delphinia Salamin says:
“The desert is depicted as a mountainous area with undulating ground lines. The motif of
the wounded hyena with an arrow in its snout is depicted again.
Here, too, the usual holds used by chasing hounds to hunt down their prey are depicted:
Mostly grabbing the prey by the hindquarters ...
In the second register, a very lifelike scene shows a wild bull trying to protect his mate and
her calf, but a second arrow to the forehead brings him to his knees, and the hound
immediately grabs the bull by the hindquarters. His mate turns her head back to watch the
action, while her calf seems oblivious to the impending danger.
In the third register a hound holds a pregnant oryx by the hind leg and in her panic she
leaves her young behind, again in the last register a pregnant oryx has left her young
prematurely in her panic. ...”
This scene from the 12th Dynasty, the Middle Kingdom, is also interesting in that we see
here already another type of hound, the younger type of Tesem. The proportions are
rectangular rather than square and the tail of the old type of Tesem, curled over the back,
is now carried in the new way, as a Sloughi would do. In the fourth register we see hares
in addition to the jackal or fox, which we can already be identified on the hunter's palette
by its characteristic tail.
Antefoqer was sent south as vizier of Amenemhat I with his son Sesostris I to conquer
Lower Nubia - the land of Wawat [47]. We also encounter this type of hound in Rekhmire,
but with an indication of origin: from Nubia, as a tribute!
This scene of Antefoqer is also depicted in the desert, in an enclosed area that is hunted,
the hounds are in this enclosure. So there is still the question of whether the capable
hounds depicted were fast enough to reach the fast game Oryx antelope and Dorcas
gazelle in the open in the run.
