The measurements used here are the same as those used to identify other breeds of dogs,
sheep, goats, camels. This work seeks to provide a morphometric profile of the Algerian
Sloughi to help in the selection of the most typical specimens of the breed.
105 Sloughis were selected: 30 from the eastern region (Batna, Setif, M’sila), 40 from the
west (Tlemcen, Sidi Bel Abbes, Ain Temouchent) and 35 from the central regions (Wilaya
of Laghouat). See map.
All Sloughis were older than 36 months, and in good health. The “giant Sloughi” more than
80cm at the withers was included. None were in active reproduction; all had the same
diet. Only Sloughis with traceable 3 generations ancestry participated in the study, and all
were measured directly at their owners’ farms.
