Drums and Containers
Accidents may occur during handling of drums and other hazardous waste containers. Hazards include
detonations, fires, explosions, vapor generation, and physical injury resulting from moving heavy
containers by hand and working around stacked drums, heavy equipment, and deteriorated drums.
While these hazards are always present, proper work practices-such as minimizing handling and using
equipment and procedures that isolate workers from hazardous substances-can minimize the risks to
site personnel. Containers are handled during characterization and removal of their contents and during
other operations. A flow chart showing one set of possible procedures for drum handling is given in
             Figure 11-1.

It’s important to be aware of the following handling hazardous drums and containers:

                • Procedures for opening drums and containers • Sampling of drums and containers

                • Materials-handling equipment • Shipping and transporting
                • Radioactive, shock-sensitive, and lab waste • Tanks and vaults

                                                                                                             10
