Our Journey to Magnet
The most prestigious distinction a healthcare organization can receive for
Nursing Excellence & Quality Patient Outcomes
What is Magnet?
Magnet is a prestigious designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) that recognizes hospitals which demonstrate quality patient care through nursing practice and health care delivery and who foster a positive work environment through the core values of empowerment, mentorship, respect, integrity and teamwork. Nine percent of hospitals nationwide have received a Magnet designation.
Evidenced-based structure & process framework leads to improved quality patient outcomes, workforce engagement, & innovations in professional nursing practice.
How did Magnet originate?
The Magnet Recognition Program® is the culmination of over 30 years of research initiated by the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) in response to a nation-wide nursing shortage in the late 1970’s/early 1980’s. The program is based on the characteristics of Magnet facilities originally described in the 1983 AAN study that allowed hospitals to successfully attract and retain nurses during a critical time. The characteristics are known as the "Forces of Magnetism." These forces are grouped into five components that represent the framework that distinguishes Magnet organizations.
