However, their independence can be taken to extreme and they can be really very poor team players. They take charge of a situation without being asked to do so. They may not listen well to other’s opinions. They may do their own thing and not get input before they take action. And when something goes wrong, Eights in Shadow tend to look for the person who did it before they fix the problem—they can be big blamers.
In Best Self, Eights are straight shooters. They communicate directly and honestly, they cut to the chase, they don’t mince words. They think that beating around the bush is a total waste of time and energy. They believe people should tell it like it is, and the good side of that is that you really always know where you stand with an Eight. They won’t wimp out on you. They’ll tell you the truth and they really expect that from other people as well. They really don’t tolerate two-faced behavior or being spoken about behind their back very well. That is something they really do loathe.

In Shadow, Eights’ straight shooting and directness can go to extreme and they can come across as blunt and really be insensitive and cruel at times. They can really border on rude. They may not be sensitive to the timing of when they say things. They may give negative feedback or bad news at the worst time. And sometimes when they get really blunt, you can feel like you’ve been sliced and diced by an Eight.
In Best Self, they are energized by a challenge, they’re very decisive, they’re able to take risks and they have a tremendous ability to take charge, particularly in a crisis. That’s when Eights really come alive. And they’re very comfortable giving out orders. They don’t waffle and they work very well under pressure. Eights are really ok making the tough decisions and they can stand by their decisions. They’re able to take the heat. Eights rarely will try to double-talk their way out of something.
Unfortunately, when this take-charge mentality and this decisiveness go to extremes, their Shadow side comes out. Eights in Shadow can run
all over people and alienate them by being too controlling. They get too caught up in the authority that they have. Another thing that can happen is that they may be poor planners. They rely too much on their ability to act, rather than thinking things through in advance. They act first, they think later. One of the ways we describe Eights in Shadow is “ready, fire, aim.”
In Best Self, Eights are assertive and they know how to get things done. They’re extremely action-oriented individuals. They have tenacity and determination as signature traits. Assertiveness from our perspective is being able to ask for what you want and being able to do it in a respectful way with an element of compassion—being able to see things from other points of view.
In Shadow, their assertiveness can become exaggerated, morphing into aggressive behavior, which can carry with it some confrontational and adversarial components. And that’s where they’re not really respectful and they’re not compassionate and they aren’t seeing things from
