1a - Leaning - הסבה
1. One should prepare his seat to make sure he has enough room to perform the mitzva of reclining
on Pesah.
2. Reclining can only be performed while leaning to the left onto something.
a. To clarify: One cannot just tilt his body leftwards. He should lean back and to the left so
that his back is actually against the back of his chair or he is leaning on his friend.
b. One cannot lean to right even if he’s left-handed since it poses a risk to choking, h as
veshalom.
i. Bediavad (after the fact), if one accidentally leans to the right:
1. He fulfills the mitzva if he’s left-handed
2. He doesn’t fulfill the mitzva if he’s right-handed.
3. The Sephardic custom is that women also recline.
4. Disregarding the element of fear, a son reclines next to his father and a student reclines next to
his Rabbi.
5. If one drank wine and did not lean, he did not fulfill the mitzva and must drink again while
leaning.
a. To clarify: If one will become sick by drinking an additional cup of wine, he can rely on
the lenient opinion that he doesn’t have to redrink the cup. This leniency does not apply
to matza (see part #8)
6. Women who forgot to lean do not have to drink again.
1b - Kadesh קדש
7. One should ensure that his table is set from early in the day so that Kiddush can be recited
immediately when it gets dark.
8. Kiddush should be recited promptly so that the children not fall asleep. Nevertheless, it cannot
be recited prior to darkness (i.e. three stars).
9. The Four Cups must be drunk according to the order written in the Hagada. One who drinks
four cups one after another, doesn’t fulfill his obligation.
10. The minimum size of the cup must be a revi’it. The most widely accepted Sephardic opinion is
86ml (some say it’s actually 75ml). The stricter opinion of the Hazon Ish, is 150ml.
a. To clarify: 86ml is the most accepted opinion and that’s what should be used. If one
wants to be strict and use a 150ml cup, he should use it for the first cup, since that’s the
most important of the Four Cups. For cups #2,3 and 4, he can revert back to the smaller
size.
11. One should drink all of the cup or at least most of the cup. This is why it’s important not have a
cup that’s too big.
a. To clarify:
i. The best way to perform the mitzva is to drink the entire cup, regardless of the
size as long as the cup held a revi’it (see #10)
