7 & 8 - Motzi/Matza מוציא מצה
1. On the night of the Seder, one should do whatever he can to eat Matza Shemura, which is matza
watched from the time of harvesting.
a. To clarify: One still fulfills the mitzva with non-Matza Shemura but it is preferable not
to.
2. One takes the matzot all together as they are currently on the plate: Two full matzot with the
smaller half in the middle and then recites the blessing of “HaMotzi Lehem Min HaAretz.”
3. Drop the third matza (the bottom full one) and recite the blessing of “A l Achilat Matza” on the top
matza and the broken half.
4. The head of the household breaks a piece from the complete matza and a piece from the broken
half and dips it in salt.
5. The matza is eaten while leaning to the left.
6. If one forgets to lean he must eat the matza again.
7. Primarily one should eat t wo kezetim of matza but if one eats one kezayit o f matza, he fulfills his
obligation
a. To clarify: In general, the measurement of kezayit is always measured in volume.
However, there is discussion whether the measurement of k ezayit of matza is measured
in volume or in weight.
i. If it was measured in volume, this would mean that a k ezayit of matza crumbled
would equal approximately 20g of matza in weight. This is approximately ⅓ of a
square machine made matza.
ii. If a kezayit of matza is measured in weight then the standard weight for a k ezayit
is 28g. This is approximately ½ of a square machine made matza.
iii. Rav Shalom Messas along with many other Sephardic sages held that we can
primarily measure the kezayit by volume and therefore measure 20gr for each
kezayit e aten. Therefore if you would eat two k ezetim, you would eat
approximately 40gr of matza.
iv. The Hida, the Kaf HaHayim and Hacham Ovadia Yosef hold that one should
measure the matza measurement using weight, i.e. 28gr. Therefore if you would
eat two k ezetim, you would eat approximately 56gr of matza.
v. Since there are many factors that make it difficult to measure matza by volume
and that the mitzva of matza is a biblical one, one should try to measure his
matza according to the stricter opinion i.e. weight (56gr for two kezetim). If one
finds it difficult to eat 56g of matza, he can measure the k ezayit by volume and
therefore eat 40g of matza to fulfill all the opinions.
vi. If that is too difficult, one can eat one kezayit totalling 20g (volume) or 28g
(weight).
vii. It is important to note that many halachic authorities hold that one merits a
mitzva for every kezayit o f matza he eats on the night of Pesah.
8. One should eat the k ezayit o f matza in 4 minutes but not more than 7.5 minutes.
