4. One should ensure to eat the Afikoman before h atzot (biblical midnight).
5. If one forgot to eat the Afikoman and remembered after Zimun was recited for B irkat HaMazon,
one should eat the Afikoman immediately without reciting the blessing of H aMotzi.
6. If one remembered after he recited Birkat HaMazon or after he made the final B eracha Aharona o n
the wine following Hallel, he should wash his hands, recite Hamotzi and eat the Afikoman.
7. After the Afikoman, one cannot eat or drink any foods except for water, coffee or tea.
13 - Barech ברך
1. The third cup is poured and B irkat HaMazon is recited.
2. After B irkat HaMazon, one recites Bore Peri HaGefen prior to drinking the 3rd cup.
a. He should also have in mind the 4th cup with this blessing.
3. One drinks the cup while adhering to the laws set out in Section #1 with regards to the first cup.
4. One may not drink any additional cups of wine between cups #3 and #4.
14 & 15 Hallel/Nirtza הלל נרצה
1. After drinking the 3rd cup, the 4th cup is poured immediately.
2. At this point, it is also customary to pour an additional cup for Eliyahu HaNavi. It is placed at the
centre of the table and nobody drinks from it.
3. The fourth cup is held throughout the entire recitation of Hallel.
4. Following Hallel, the fourth cup is drunk while adhering to the laws set out in Section #1 with
regards to the first cup.
5. Beracha Aharona is recited following the drinking of the fourth cup since one has no intent and
cannot drink any more wine.
6. Only water is permitted to be consumed as a drink following the Four Cups.
7. One should continue discussing the miracles/story of the Exodus until sleep takes over him.
8. The Sephardic custom is to recite Shir HaShirim in its entirety following the songs of Nirtza.
16 - Moroccan Customs of the Seder (Darke Abotenou)
1. Some have the custom to set a place-setting for Eliyahu HaNavi in addition to his cup.
2. No “S halom Alechem” is recited if the Seder night falls out on Friday night, rather we proceed with
the order of K adesh (Yom HaShishi).
3. On the 2nd night of Pesah, the Hagada is read in Arabic, Spanish or French in addition to the
standard Hebrew. This is because the main mitzva is to understand what is being read.
a. To clarify: The reason for this custom is so the children understand what is being said in
the Hagada. If they don’t understand those languages, it is proper to recite the Hagada
with an English translation as well.
