                           Quicksilver Hardware Renderer
Perhaps the biggest new feature in Max 2011 is the inclusion of the Quicksilver Hardware Renderer. This
renderer is selected in the Render Setup dialog box and renders mental ray–quality images in a fraction of
the time. For example, a scene that was rendered in 2 minutes using mental ray would take only 5 seconds
in Quicksilver. The benefit is that Quicksilver uses the capability of the graphics card and requires support
for Shader Model 3.0. You can learn more about this renderer in Chapter 23, “Rendering a Scene and
                           Enabling Quicksilver.”

                           Composite 2011
Max users have complained to Autodesk that both Maya and SoftImage packages include a full-blown com-
positing tool, so Autodesk has bundled a compositing tool with 3ds Max 2011. Composite 2011 is
Autodesk’s own Toxik tool. You can learn more about this new tool in Chapter 49, “Compositing with
Render Elements and the Video Post Interface.”
                           Slate Material Editor

The Material Editor has been overhauled in 3ds Max 2011. The new interface displays connected maps as
connected nodes and isn’t limited to the number of sample slots. It also is simplified to make it easier to
build and work with materials. The old Material Editor is still around, but it is called the Compact Material
Editor. The Slate Material Editor is covered in more detail in Chapter 15, “Using the Slate Material Editor.”

                           Viewport Canvas

The Viewport Canvas, although new in the previous version of Max, has been improved again. It now
allows you to paint directly on any 3D object using any type of map. It also includes several new painting
tools including Blur, Sharpen, Dodge, and Burn. The layer features in Canvas work very similar to
Photoshop and make moving, rotating, and scaling textures easy. All these new features are covered in
Chapter 31, “Painting in the Viewport Canvas and Rendering Surface Maps.”

                           Object Paint
As part of the Graphite Modeling tools, a new panel called Object Paint lets you select and place objects by
dragging with the mouse. You also have control over the size and orientation of the painted objects. You
also can select an edge and regularly place the object along the path of the selected edge. The Graphite
Modeling tools and the new Object Paint feature are covered in Chapter 14, “Using the Graphite Modeling
                           Tools and Painting with Objects.”

                           Improved containers
Containers are another new feature from the previous version of Max that has been updated even more. The
new features include the ability to define rules and to lock specific parameters. You also can use proxy con-
tainers. Containers are covered in Chapter 24, “Building Complex Scenes with Containers and XRefs and
                           Using Asset Tracking.”
