WINES OF ORIGIN SONDAGSKLOOF.
In 2004, when approached to develop a wine label for the 9th winery on Hermanus’ R320, we capitalized on the village’s origin and sense of place. We named the cellar and wine after the village’s original name, Hermanuspietersfontein, assigned in 1855 in honour of Hermanus Pieters, a Dutch teacher who taught farmers’ children in Afrikaans. Farmers often paid Pieters in sheep, which he grazed near a fountain by the sea, a spot that became known as Hermanus Pieters se Fontein.
As homage to the teacher, we exclusively used Afrikaans in the wine names and label copy, becoming the first winery in South Africa to do so. We adopted the sheep as the brand mascot, believing that without the sheep, the town and winery would have no name.
The Hermanuspietersfontein wine farm is situated in the heart of SondagskloofTM, a trademarked cool climate wine region in South Africa. While the cellar is known for its blended wines, the winemaker decided to showcase his skills and prowess by creating single cultivar wines such as Pinot Noir, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. To communicate the origin and sense of place, we named the range SondagskloofTM and branded it with the farm’s iconic sheep trademark, reinforcing the association between the wine and its terroir.
