Smile Mêrim Smile!
Dutch farmers in the Overberg did not want their children to be tutored in English and imported Dutch teacher Hermanus Pieters from the Netherlands. Sometimes they needed to pay the teacher in sheep which he grazed at a fountain near the sea. Children would play here after school and when the parents asked about their whereabouts it was always “Hermanus Pieters se Fontein”. In 1855, years after his passing, the locals decided to name their village Hermanuspietersfontein.
