NATIONAL SORORITY OF PHI DELTA KAPPA, INC. • 80TH ANNUAL EASTERN REGIONAL CONFERENCE
eastern regional director’s report
From: Dr. Patsy Squire, Eastern Region Director
Date: June 15, 2020
Re: Eastern Region Report
It is with sincere pleasure to know the Eastern Region is off to a good start. We are
building upon the work of our past Eastern Regional Directors. I hope you will join me
in my focus to increase membership, visibility and literacy.
Membership
Increasing membership is a major goal for our region. We invite interested and
qualified educators to the Cluster Interest Meetings and our Regional Interest Meeting.
Our Member-at-Large, Membership Chair and Director of Public Relations assisted
chapters with recruitment. Our Founders and Sorors are depending on us to continue the
legacy and motto. It is my goal to encourage Chapters to recruit 500 Sorors (20 per
chapter) and retain Sorors in the East by 2023!
We also provided assistance to revive struggling chapters. In order to meet this goal,
we will need to increase the budget to cover transportation and lodging for Member at
Large and/or Eastern Regional Director to visit chapters.
We received permission to institute emergency Krinon Lines. Struggling chapters may:
have a four-week line, pay National/Regional Per Capita, pay local dues and order pins
later.
Our Membership Chair, Soror Angela Ringgold instituted monthly Zoom Meetings with
our Chapter 2nd Anti-Basileus to discuss progress and training towards recruitment,
reclamation and retention.
Visibility
Our second goal focuses on enhancing organizational visibility to include branding and
generating activities and procedures for enhancing visibility. Suggestions include
sharing and training chapters: developing official press releases, visiting legislators to
discuss our Call of Action, developing partnerships with school Superintendents-
Principals-local officials, making presentations at school board meetings, submitting
brief articles to the newspaper monthly, using social media to post classroom activities,
and preparing an elevator speech (1 to 2 minutes) to share with individuals about this
most prestigious organization. We also prepared to launch our new and improved
website on June 29, 2020 at 8:00PM via Zoom.
Literacy
My final goal is to encourage chapters to adopt a school within their local district.
According to research, two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end
of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to
have Sorors, Anthropos, Xinos and Kudos adopt a school in their area and read to
students at least twice a year. Our Eastern Region Literacy Committee hosted the first
ever, “Dad Lights the Way to Read with NSPDK”. The men in our lives read to youth
via YouTube during the week prior to Father’s Day.
