students with grade appropriate tours of the plantation
home and its dependency buildings by a costumed
historical interpreter. Our grounds provide a picnic area
with a covered pavilion so students may spend a day at
our site.

At Destrehan Plantation, educators and students learn about the following:
• e construction of the manor house by a former slave
• Life on an indigo and sugar cane plantation in the 1700s and 1800s
• e role of this historical site in the largest slave rebellion in US History
• Destrehan’s contribution to the development of the rst Louisiana constitution
• e plantation’s use as a home for more than 700 newly freed slaves during the Civil War
• e history of the site as one of the rst oil re neries in St. Charles Parish
• e local community involvement that led to the formation of the River Road Historical Society
whose mission is to preserve history and provide education on Destrehan Plantation.
Established in 1787, Destrehan Plantation is a
French creole plantation and the oldest documented
plantation home in the lower Mississippi River
Valley. The plantation is located on historic River
Road less than 30 minutes from New Orleans and
10 minutes from the New Orleans International
Airport. The plantation is open daily from 9:00
am to 4:00 pm. Forty- ve minute guided tours are
available every half hour.
