      THE NORTHSHORE

        SOUTHERN COMFORT
Comfort food has its own scene in St. Tammany Parish. Big Mama puts her heart into building up her community and into her food.
Order a bowl of sensational seafood gumbo or the Big Mama seafood pasta, which is a bed of pasta covered in a homemade Cajun
sauce with grilled shrimp, crawfish and a fried catfish filet to top it off. Comfort comes in a cup too. Roots Plants + Coffee has a bright,
airy feel and relaxation washes over each person the moment they enter through the door. The specialty coffees and gluten-free pastries
        do not disappoint.

        SERVING WITH LOVE
Liz Munson spreads love in her restaurant and in life. Liz’s Where Y’at Diner is colorful, full of fun and spreading happiness to all. Liz’s
Goulash, the most popular dish on the menu, was born out of an impromptu breakfast made for friends. Her friends loved it, and it has
been a staple on the menu from the restaurant’s start. Using fresh ingredients, everything is chopped, shredded and mixed right in the
restaurant. Over the years, Liz’s Diner has faced some hardships, a fire and pandemic. With the love that overflowed from the community,
Liz and the diner have comeback each time. Now, Liz’s Diner has expanded to include Liz’s Back Porch. A quick service location located
next door to the main restaurant. Pick up some sliders and specialty daquiris to have a picnic.

        SOMETHING’S BREWING
There must be something in the water in St. Tammany Parish; it’s home to the first and largest craft brewery in the state, Abita Brewery.
Abita’s exponential growth since its founding in 1986 has transformed the microbrewery to a recognized brand. Their flagship brew Abita
Amber is still the most popular and is used in mouthwatering recipes in chef-driven dining rooms across Louisiana, but Abita’s also known
for seasonal brews like Mardi Gras Bock and sodas like Abita Root Beer and King Cake Soda. Abita contends there really IS something
in the water– it uses only unfiltered water from a very deep aquifer – and imbibers love to belly up to the bar in the tasting room and sip
for themselves. Chafunkta Brewing Company in Mandeville has recently expanded and produces iconic brews like Voo Ka Ray IPA, Old
504 Porter and Bayou Blaze, getting rave reviews. Beer is not the only libation being made in St. Tammany Parish. Wild Bush Farm and
Vineyard is new on the scene and crushing the Louisiana winemaking scene.

        QUICK BITES: GAS STATION EATS
In St. Tammany Parish, gas stations and convenience stores aren’t just a place to fuel up your car or stop in for an item you forgot when
grocery shopping this week. They are also a source of mouthwatering, popular food dishes. From poboys and fried chicken to burgers and
BBQ, these quick bites need to be added to the road trip route. Try the flaky, fried fish plate at Dianne’s Grocery & Deli. The overstuffed
poboys at Moody’s Time Saver will stop you in your tracks.

        LATER GATOR
Thousands of people come to The Northshore each year to see alligators in their native habitat, the Honey Island Swamp. But some
of them come to eat gator, an ingredient found on a number of restaurant menus here. Try it fried at seafood joints, made into Gator
Piquant at Creole restaurants, or gussied up at places like Trey Yuen in Mandeville, where the Wong brothers put an Asian spin on gator
meat, blending Asian technique and Louisiana protein in a seasonal tasty Szechuan Spicy Alligator. Or, try it blackened at the popular
The Chimes restaurant on the Bogue Falaya River. Chickeny-flavored gator meat might be a novelty in other parts of the country, but on
The Northshore, it’s just another home-grown ingredient.
