Hazardous Substances
• Contractors must ensure that an assessment is made of all
chemical agents used at work. This includes substances that are a
liquid, vapour gas or solid;
• The contractor as the employer shall avoid the use of hazardous
substances where ever possible by using a substitution of a safer
product;
• Where this cannot be achieved a “competent” person shall
complete a COSHH Risk Assessment of the product and detail the
relevant hazards, control measures and management
arrangements;
• This includes the delivery, storage, handling, use and disposal of
the product. COMMUNICATE THE CONTENTS OF THE COSHH
ASSESSMENTS;
• This includes training, P.P.E., First Aid and fire arrangements, use of
extraction units, wetting down systems etc;
• NOTE, where respirators or face masks are worn, face fit testing
will be required. Refer to HSE Guidance;
• The contents of the COSHH Assessments must be communicated
to those using or that may be affected by the use of such
substances.
