After Arltadik lw l been gnawing at the bone
for some time Jack goes close up to her. She
growls at him, but Jack looks so amiable that
she immediately feels assured that she is in no
danger of losing the hone. Then Jack gives her
a lick or two with his big tongue about the
chap& and trots off after Karsuk,
Karsuk growls too, when Jack comes up
with him, but satisfied that Jack is in an
amiable mood, and not seeking a fight, subsides
immediately, and after they have exchanged
glances, they trot off together a little way in
the most sociable manner. In about five min
utes they return, by different routes, however,
and both lie down upon the snow and go to
sleep. It is evident they have had a “ talk" to
gether; or, to use a political phrase, Jack had
"seen” Karsuk.
Arkadik lies down too, but by-and-by she
goes over to Jack, and crawls close up to him,
and puts her head on his big shoulder, and her
