we had started we observed that Arkadik was
looking inquiringly over her shoulder. She did
it several times, then, suddenly, when she thought
the driver was not noticing her, she fell out of
her; place. Then she darted under Ainna-aya’s
line, and, quick as lightning, crowded in between
Amna-aya and Jack.
Jack looked round at Arkadik kindly and
approvingly, and both of them pulled away at a
tremendous rate, as il: they were afraid of the
whip, Arkadik knew well enough that she had
done wrong in slipping out of her place, so she
tried to make up with the driver by pulling extra
hard. She panted as if her heart would break,
and bent down to her wovk as if she would pull
the whole sledge herself.
Seeing where Arkadik way, I said to the
driver:
“ Arkadik is out of her place,"
Tn reply he said, “ I see it, sir; hut she pulls
harder there, I think. We had better try her lor
a wliile alongside of Jack*”
