                                         ASTER  THE  BATTLE;  JACK'S  VICTORY.



                             gpMOTHING-  mare  of  importance  happened

                                       during  our  journey  that  day,  Arkadik

                               ™       managed  to keep  her chosen place  beside

                             Jack,  although,  of  course,  she  could  not  have
                             done  it  without  the  connivance  of  the  driver;

                             and after this little fight we got on famously.

                                 But  when  we  halted  for  the  night,  and  the
                             dogs  were  unharnessed,  the  feelings  which  had

                             been excited  to  fever-heat  in  the  breasts of  the

                             iiour dogs broke out in the most angry manner.

                                 Erebus* incensed  to  the  last  degree,  trembling

                             with  fnry,  his  head  up, his  eyes  dilated, his ears
                             stuck sharply forward, Ids, Bair bristling all  over

                             his  body, his  tail  curling  proudly* made directly
