Talk with your school’s Academic College Readiness Coaches (ACRCs) to learn more
BGUN students are given the opportunity to visit various CUNY and SUNY college campuses, to learn more about these schools and better understand what it’s like to live on a college campus. College representatives give official tours of the campus, and students attend presentations by admissions, financial aid, and other college offices. Visits may take place during the weekends or overnight. BGUN also offers virtual tours, letting students tour campuses without the travel. This school year, one such college trip will be organized locally, at Lehman College, the home of Bronx GEAR UP Network. The trip is open to 10th graders and is scheduled to take place on March 4, 2020.
Educational Field Trips
BGUN organizes a series of educational field trips, allowing students to leave the classroom and learn in different environments, ranging from longtime BGUN partners like the American Museum of Natural History and the New York Botanical Garden to local New York City institutions, like the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
High Potential Achievers
BGUN’s High-Potential Achievers program challenges students with rigorous coursework in their core academic subjects, preparing them for advanced classes in their schools. If you are highly motivated and plan on attending college, join the High- Potential Achievers. Classes will include College Writing, Algebra II/Trigonometry, and Chemistry. Please contact Janill Marquez at janill.marquez@lehman.cuny.edu or call (718) 960-5618 for more information.
Winter/Spring Institute
The Winter and Spring Institutes are a series of academic workshops in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields of study. This year, the Winter Institute will include a series of STEM workshops on the Lehman College campus. The Spring Institute will be a three-day workshop series at the New York Botanical Garden, running from April 14 to April 16, 2020. Recruitment for the Winter Institute will start in January, while recruitment for the Spring Institute will begin in March.
Pre-Internship Workshops
In the winter and spring, the Bronx Zoo/Wildlife Conservation Society and the New York Botanical Garden will host workshops for BGUN students, preparing them to participate in these institutions’ internship programs. The Wildlife Conservation
Society workshops will include up-close interactions with animals, guided exhibit explorations, and hands-on activities in the classroom. This session will run on January 8, January 25, and February 1, 2020, from 10am to 2pm.. Participation in these workshops will increase students’ chances of being selected for the internship program.
The New York Botanical Garden workshops will take place on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm for seven sessions in the fall, winter, and spring. Participation in this seven-week Saturday Institute will allow students to participate in a two-week paid internship program.
To learn more about these internships, see page 6.
Test Prep Classes
Eleventh grade BGUN students will have the opportunity to take SAT prep classes, through a provider called A-List Education. These prep sessions are tailored to help students focus on content and strategies needed to increase their scores. Prep is important for all standardized tests, but research shows that students who participate in SAT prep score higher on their tests.
After school, BGUN also offers Regents prep classes, helping students prepare for their upcoming exams. For more information regarding after school classes at a specific school, please contact your school’s ACRC.
Family and Cultural Events
Every year, BGUN organizes cultural events in conjunction with The Bronx Institute’s partner organizations.
The Bronx Zoo will be hosting a Holiday Lights Exhibit—a vibrant light show featuring animal lanterns, animated sculptures, and colorful designs, placed throughout the zoo, using LED technology.
The Bronx GEAR UP Network and The New York Botanical Garden invited students and families to their annual Holiday Train Show on November 26. The show featured accurate models of recognizable New York City landmarks, centered around a model train exhibit. These landmarks are made from natural materials taken from the Garden.
Digital Communication
BGUN regularly communicates with students digitally, sending college access topics, financial aid advice, academic tips and strategies, and other essential information straight to your email. Please share your email address with elaine.roman@lehman.cuny.edu, to make sure you stay up-to- date with the latest information.
