Lauren Reyes, Pelham Prep, 11th Grade:
The Summer at Brown program let me take a course, Abnormal Psychology, that was the basis of the career that I am interested in. It really opened my eyes and helped me realize which branch of psychology I’d want to work in. I decided I wanted to pursue a career in forensic psychology. I really like the idea of determining sentences for criminals. Before the program, I was interested in child psychology, but after we watched documentaries and read case reports from the field, I didn’t really want to do that anymore.
The program exposed me to what it’s like to be in college. It was my first time traveling to another state on my own, but the staff at Brown were happy to guide me through everything. I was never confused on what I was supposed to do or what would be happening tomorrow. I was also able to meet actual Brown students who answered every question I had about the school honestly like. I’m actually thinking of applying to Brown now. For any students who are going to be taking part in the Brown program, make sure that you pick courses that you are actually interested in, ready your syllabus to keep track of your assignments and remember to ask questions about the school while you’re there. This program really opens your eyes and helps you figure out what you want to be doing.
Antonia Akanjo, KAPPA, 10th Grade:
The Summer at Brown program was very awakening for me. It alerted me to how real college would be. I had many new experiences, like sleeping in a dorm or taking a three-hour class with a ten- minute break. It taught me that college is something that you have to want to do. You have to develop the drive for it if you want to succeed. The biggest things that I had to adjust to were cohabitating with a stranger, preparing for my classes and changing how I looked at things and people that were new to me.
One of the biggest things I learned was time management. Stress can be a slow killer, and you may think that you don’t have free time for things, but you can make that time. I’d say people should definitely go to that program if they have a chance. It’s a real eye- opener, and the staff were thoughtful. They actually went out of their way to see how I was doing.
