Introduction of Servocyclotherm G at Digboi Refinery – An Import Substitution

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

An Inhibited Ethylene Glycol based imported product viz. Dowcal 100 was

used as coolant at Digboi Refinery in its Solvent Dewaxing Unit (SDU),
which was commissioned by the BOT Firm: UOP LLC, Illinois, USA

in 1999

IndianOil’s R&D Centre in coordination with Technical Services at IndianOil
AOD State Office developed Servocyclotherm G for substitution of the
imported product meeting the requirements of corrosion protection and
thermal stability.

Samples of Dowcal 100 and Servocyclotherm G were collected for
checking Homogeneity and Miscibility for analysing if there would be any
phase separation. It was found that Dowcal 100 and Servocyclotherm G
are compatible to each other in all ratios.

Servocyclotherm G was introduced in the Solvent Dewaxing Unit by

completely replacing Dowcal 100 in August 2019. Performance of
Servocyclotherm G has been found to be excellent in the de-oiling
processsince introduction of the indigenized grade.

The import substitution has been a boon for the refinery due to the fact it
has ensured cost savings to the refinery to the tune of Rs 27 lakh
annually.

A performance letter was also issued by Digboi Refinery so that the same
becomes an effective tool for introducing the product for similar
applications in other industries including refineries.
