W: Hi. What’s that you’re reading? You don’t look very happy about it
M: It’s a letter 1 received Irom the library about my overdue books. It says that 1 have to pay twenty-live
dollars, or they won’t give me my grade report
W: Really? That seems like a lot 01 money. 1 didn’t know that the library's late lees were so expensive.
M: Well , it says here that the lines were increased this year. 1 didn’t even know they were thinking about raising
          the lines
W: Oh , 1 remember now. Last lall there was a petition among the students about the library late lees. The
increase in late lees was supposed to supply supplementary income lor the new computers
M: Yes, that’s it exactly. 1 think this is awlul ‘ It’s so much money. 1 can’t afford to pay all these lees
W: 1 think it’s great. The extra money will really help make the new computer lab a good place to work. 1
strongly supported the petition because 1 want the new lacilities to be up-to-date ‘
M: But what about the students who have to pay the late lees? It’s unlair to expect us to pay lor the new
          computers ‘
W: No, it isn’t. 1 think it’s unlair when students don’t return library materials on time. 1I you have a book that 1
need and you return it late, 1 can’t get my research done ‘ As a result, my grades might be lower. You
should be punished lor disrespecting the other students
M: Well, 1 wish 1 had returned my books on time

W: 1 think university students are very independent and hard working. 1 think professors treat students like
adults with a greater sense 01 camaraderie. The most important lesson to learn at university is how to take
          care 01 yoursell‘

W: 1 think that university students should not be obliged to go to class. The predominant purpose 01 college
is to prepare students to be adults. Students need to be allowed to make decisions lor themselves.
Choosing to go to class is an important choice that students need to be given. In addition, many college
classes are seminar classes. These have pre-made notes and large class sizes. They also have a teacher
assistant lecturing. Students can get the notes from Iriends and the teacher won’t even notice. This is a
waste 01 time. College students should not be obliged to go to class
        Sample response 2
M: 1 think that college students should be obliged to go to class. 1 acknowledge that they are adults and can
make their own decisions, but after university, they get jobs. Everyone is obliged to go to work everyday.
This is a good way to practice lor the real world. More importantly, the ultimate goal 01 college is to get
more knowledge. You learn by going to class. It also allows you to be a part 01 discourse with classmates
This can help to lurther your knowledge. College students should be obliged to go to class

M: The microchip was invented in Silicon Valley. There are so many technology lirms in Silicon Valley because
modern technology is reliant upon the microchip. 1 think this lecture will be about how Silicon Valley started
          and what it is.
