BEST UNDERWATER
10 A swimming elephant keeps the tip of
its trunk above the water. It uses its trunk
like a snorkel or breathing tube.

Ellies also go to these animals for
the amazing things their noses can do
underwater.
11 A hippopotamus spends most of the hot day in the
water, where it’s nice and cool. Breathing is not a problem
because the hippo’s nostrils face upward, sticking out of
the water. If the hippo does go completely underwater, the
nostrils shut tight.
12 Sharks breathe through their gills, so all their nostrils do is
smell, all the time. The shark can compare how long it takes
a smell to reach each nostril to figure out which direction the
smell is coming from.
