Wildlife Corridors: Connecting the Dots
Many years ago, the highway had only two lanes. Up to
200 large animals were killed by traffic each year. A project
to divide the highway into four lanes began in the early
1980s. That project made the highway safe for both people
and wildlife. Both sides have fences now, so animals can’t
cross. What problem did the Trans-Canada Highway cause in Banff
National Park when it had only two lanes?
Up to 200 large animals were killed by traffic each year.
Many deer, elk, and other animals
have died trying to cross this highway
in Colorado. As of 2015, two wildlife
overpasses and five underpasses were
being built along the highway.
