GENRE STUDY Plays are stories that can be performed for an
audience.
• Authors of plays might organize the story into scenes. Each
scene focuses on an important event and builds upon the
events in the previous scenes.
• Stage directions help to set the scenes and to develop the
characters.
• Plays rely on dialogue, or conversation between characters,
to keep the plot moving.
