Sophie Scholl
HERO OF THE RESISTANCE
A Girl in Hitler’s Germany
16 Sophie Scholl was born in Germany in 1921. She grew
up surrounded by the propaganda of the rising Nazi
party, and when she was 12 years old, she joined the
Hitler Youth movement with many of her friends. Soon,
however, Sophie began to realize that Hitler and his Nazi
party were bad for Germany—and the world.
Standing Up Against Hitler
17 In 1942, the Nazis began to deport German Jews to
concentration camps where they were forced to labor
under inhumane conditions, or were murdered outright.
Soon after, Sophie, then in her early 20s, and her brother
and a friend, began to publish leaflets critical of Hitler
throughout Germany.
18 Sophie and her group called themselves The White
Rose, and they kept their identities secret. The work of
The White Rose was incredibly dangerous because
Germany at the time was tightly controlled by the state
police. Anyone found speaking out against the
government would be jailed—or worse.
A Symbol of Courage
19 Unfortunately, Sophie and her fellow members of The
White Rose were reported and captured. Sophie was
brutally interrogated, convicted of treason, and then
killed on February 22, 1943.
20 Today, Sophie is remembered as a hero who stood
up to one of history’s worst dictators.
