               Anne Frank

               HOLOCAUST DIARIST

               A Family in Hiding

21 Anne Frank grew up in a happy and loving Jewish home
in Germany. As her parents saw Hitler become more
powerful, they knew that it wasn’t safe to be Jewish in
Europe, and they tried to escape to England or the
United States. When they failed to receive permission to
immigrate, they instead moved to the Netherlands, which
was soon occupied by Nazi Germany. As Anne’s family

realized that they couldn’t escape Hitler’s reach, they
went into hiding when Anne was ten years old. Anne
and her family moved into what was called the Secret
Annex. Non-Jewish friends brought them food and hid
               their location.

               The Voice of a Writer

22 Shortly before her family went into hiding, Anne received
a diary for a birthday present. She began writing, giving
details of her life in hiding. She captured the moments
of fear, longing, and humor that she and her family
experienced. She also wrote about her dreams for
               the future.

23 Anne’s family was discovered by the Nazis after two
years in hiding and sent to a concentration camp. Anne
was only 15 years old when she died. After the war, her

father discovered her journal and was so moved by her
writing that he chose to publish it. Soon, The Diary of
Anne Frank became one of the most widely read books in
the world. Over the years, there have been more than 30
               million copies in print.
