Malala Yousafzai
YOUNGEST NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER
A Girl’s Right to Education
39 As a girl growing up in the Swat Valley region of Pakistan,
Malala wasn’t aiming to be anyone’s hero. She was born
in 1997 and had a happy childhood with a loving family—
her mother, her father, and her younger brother. She was
a girl who just wanted to go to school and learn with her
friends. An excellent student, she was encouraged by her
parents in her education.
40 When the Taliban, an ultraconservative armed
religious group, began to take control of the Swat Valley,
they began attacking girls’ schools and promoting the
idea that girls should not be allowed to receive an
education. When Malala was 11 years old, she began
blogging about her experience trying to get an education
despite the pressure from the Taliban. She gave a speech
in Peshawar, Pakistan, entitled “How dare the Taliban
take away my basic right to education?”
41 Malala continued working as an activist for girls’
education. She was awarded Pakistan’s National Youth
Peace Prize in 2011. Soon after, her family discovered
that the Taliban had issued a death threat against her.
Malala and her father were dubious that even the Taliban
would actually attempt to assassinate a child. They were
soon proved wrong.
dubious If you are dubious you are doubtful and disbelieving.
