Short Moving to a New Country:
A Survival Guide
Read
1 Long ago, many people were
nomadic. They moved frequently
to find food and other
resources. Today, many people
stay in the same area for long
periods, maybe even for a
lifetime. However, others make
big moves—to a new country,
maybe even a new continent.
2 Immigrating, or moving to a new country, can be a great adventure.
There’s no doubt about it, though: adjusting to a new country and culture
is also a challenge, especially for kids. It’s hard enough starting at a
new school across town, let alone in a country that speaks an unfamiliar
language! Fortunately, a few survival strategies can help make a big
move a lot easier.
Curing Homesickness
3 For many people, one of the hardest parts
of moving to a new country is leaving their
old one behind. They miss their former
homes, as well as their family and friends.
They might miss their favorite sports
teams, their favorite TV shows, and their
favorite foods, too.
4 The good news is homesickness is usually
temporary. One way to treat it is by
staying in touch with people back home.
Email, phone calls, and even letter writing
make this easy. Chatting by live video is a
lot like being in the same room, even when
the chatters are thousands of miles apart.
