22 After Willie learned some life lessons from Katie and Kinyani, he was
introduced to the gorillas who would become his lifelong mates: Choomba,
Machi, Mia Moja (MOH-jah), and Kuchi. Six years later, Willie fathered his
first baby with Choomba, a female named Kudzoo. “I feel like crying,” said
Zoo Atlanta Director Dr. Terry Maple, watching Choomba cradle the baby
she had given birth to late on a Tuesday night. Over the years, Willie B.
fathered four more babies—Willie B. Jr., Olympia, Lulu, and Sukari.
23 Daddy Willie liked to spend time with the little ones, letting them slide
down his big belly. When his mate Mia Moja became ill, Willie B. completely
took over the care of their baby Olympia for a day or two. Olympia followed her
big daddy around until her mother was well enough to join the troop again.
Willie B. spends quality time with his
first mate, Kinyani, at Zoo Atlanta.
