Problems with Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels can cause pollution even before we burn
them. Several oil tankers, ships that transport
oil, have had accidents. The tankers spilled
the oil they were carrying. The spilled oil

polluted the water. It also killed sea animals. In 1989, an
oil tanker named the Exxon Valdez ran aground
in Alaska and broke open. It spilled 416 million
liters of oil into the ocean! The spill stretched
for 740 kilometers. Hundreds of thousands of
sea birds, otters, and other animals were killed.
