               Let’s compromise

Park: How much would you ask for this electronic testing equipment?
Jackson: Well, actually its current price is US $2,570, but considering our history of good business
with you, we have decided to offer it for US $2,250. I hope that’s acceptable to you, Mr. Park.
Park: Oh, we really appreciate your offer, Mr. Jackson, but the item is still too expensive. Please
don’t try to rip me off. I’ve got a current quotation from your competitors for this kind of elec-
tronic testing equipment for US$2,150. As longtime business partners, I’m hoping that you can
give us the best deal in the market. I think you should top the price prevailing in the market.
Yoon: Is that so, Mr. Park. Hmmm, I see your point. Well, we will do our best to make a special
discount of 5% off the total invoice. Of course, we are aware that you deserve some preferential
treatment because of our strong partnership. Don’t worry, Mr. Park, I’m positive that you can
get the discount that you’re asking for.
Park: OK. Thank you very much for your quotation, Mr. Yoon. No wonder we’ve been business
partners for so long. We always settle things via compromise. I hope this will lead to a longer
                  relationship.

               1. Do compromises always bring good in a business?

                  Sample answer:
Yes, I think so. Making compromises has a way of enlightening both parties, so that the best for
                  both is always achieved.

               2. What makes a good compromise?

                  Sample answer:
Of course, a good compromise is one that is fair and profitable to both companies. It’s some-
thing that is well thought of and well planned. It aims to benefit all involved parties.

               3. What happens if a compromise is not reached?

                  Sample answer:
Well, a deal may not push through. It’s hard to continue doing business if there’s a misunder-
standing or conflict. On the other hand, deals that are closed without reaching a compromise
may result to problems in the future.
