Acid-Base Strength

The strength and weakness of an acid can be seen from the

amount of residual acid produced and how it tends to be
                dissolved in water.

                Strong Acids

Strong acids are acids that ionize

                completely in water Examples of

                                                                 2
strong acids include HCl, HBr, HI, H SO 4
etc. HCl when dissolved into water
                forms hydrogen ions and chlorine
                ions. Strong acids are strong

                electrolytes that ionize completely in
                water

                                                                                      Weak Acids

Weak acids are acids that are
only slightly ionized in water. For

                                                      example, acetic acid (CH COOH),
                                                                                                3
when CH COOH is dissolved in water
                                                                     3
contains a mixture of molecules of
                                                      non-ionized acid, H O and conjugate

                                                                                  3
