NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

It has been nearly a year since publication of the previous issue of the
Tales of the Paradise Ridge. This issue was originally scheduled for
winter 2019, just as Paradise was emerging from the devastation of
the November 2018 Camp Fire. Who could have guessed that just as
the Gold Nugget Museum was getting back on its feet, a deadly
coronavirus would slam shut its doors?

This issue is, in part, a snapshot of the pre-COVID era. It covers events
ending through January 2019 when several articles would have been
more relevant: the museum Board of Director’s visit to the Johnstown,
Pennsylvania, museum; Paradise’s 40th birthday; post- re changes at
Paradise High School; observations from the museum’s operations
manager; and the Paradise High School’s All-Class reunion in Septem-
ber 2019. This issue’s o erings also include new information about
John Ware’s origins, an updated history of the Miocene canal, the story
of Governor George Perkins and the Perkins Rock, and the rst three
                                            chapters of Sam Dresser’s journal.

Sadly, this is my last issue as the Tales’ editor. Having moved out of the
area, I believe an on-site editor would be a better t. I have thoroughly
enjoyed working with our many talented writers and getting to know
them better. I wish all of you—authors and readers alike—the best.
And keep the history of the Paradise Ridge alive!
