Plaits and Box Plait Weave\Extensions
The use of plaits and box plaits:
The first form of hair extensions were plaits. A synthetic fibre that
matched natural black hair, and can be bought in bulk bundles, was used
initially to fill gaps in cane rows, when building a base for a sew on
weave, these gaps were caused by bald spots or broken areas. The fibre
was bent in half and added to the two outside sections as it was plaited to
the scalp. The fibre was a metre long so when the hairdresser had plaited
all the clients’ natural hair to the scalp there was still at least 14 inches
left over, so by continuing plaiting a hair extension was created. Fig 1
