If you are using a tube with a bulb
18. Clamp the tube below the bulb,
19. With the right hand, squeeze the bulb thus forcing the air out through the funnel.
20. With the left hand, pinch tubing above the bulb/proximal to you/ and at the same time
with the right hand, release the clamp. This creates a suction which will draw the
stomach contents into the bulb.
21. Lower funnel and allow excess gastric contents to drain into the pail.
22. Pour 200-300 cc of solution/water into the funnel. Before the funnel is empty allow the
solution to drain.
23. Before a solution stops running. Turn up the funnel and add another quantity of solution
24. Repeat this procedure until the returns are clean.
25. Instruct the client to take a deep breath and hold it to close epiglottis
26. Monitor the patient's vital signs, urine output, and level of consciousness every 15
minutes and notify the physician for any changes.
27. Give mouth wash
28. If ordered, gently remove the tube, feel the client’s tube, and watch the respiration
29. Remove glove, hand wash, Clean, or discard used equipment.
30. Comfort the patient
31. Record the procedure, including the time, date, type of irrigating solution and the number
of gastric contents drained.
4.17 Gastric Gavage
Definition: Gastric gavage is providing nutritional supplements when the patient is
unable or not willing to take food per mouth with normal GI tract functioning.
Purpose
To provide total supplemental nutrition
Restore fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance.
Reduce or eliminate catabolism and negative nitrogen balance.
Precaution
Severe pancreatitis
enter cutaneous fistulae
GI ischemia
Contraindication
Diffused peritonitis
An intestinal obstruction that prohibits normal bowel functioning
Intractable vomiting; paralytic ileus
Severe diarrhea
