Page 177 - Fighting Fit: Boxing, Workouts, Techniques, and Sparring
P. 177
Situational sparring
Like the other drills, perform situational sparring in
three minute rounds with a one minute rest in
between.
Always start a new drill slowly. Gradually increase
speed and intensity as you gain proficiency.
Begin with offense versus defense, then style versus
style (same styles and as well as differing styles).
Like everything else, limit what you work on each
session and perfect it.
Boxing styles to learn
These are the styles you worked on the bag as part of
the Five drills.
Outside or range fighting
Makes use of a long rhythm, the jab, and plenty of
footwork.
Inside fighting or infighting
Utilizes a short rhythm, lots of defense (blocks and
ducks), pivoting, some side-to-side stepping and short
powerful punches.
Counterpunching
Works off an opponent’s punch.A boxer must be
quick to see the punch, perform a suitable defensive
move and throw a proper counter.
In and out or in/out fighting
Combines the essentials of inside and outside
fighting.
