portable generators are sold each year. But most of them run on dirty diesel, adding the common problem of fuel degradation
to the list of customer concerns.
Today, more businesses are considering an option that’s both cost-efficient and environmentally friendly — a com-
bined heat and power (CHP) unit. A propane-powered CHP is an engine powering a generator to produce electricity. It’s great
for the bottom line because it reverts the waste energy it generates back into the building for space and water heating. Unused
electricity can also be sold back to the electric company.
Larger, more long-term solutions using propane to pair with other distributed energy systems (solar panels, wind
turbines, CHPs, generators) are gaining popularity too. Microgrids are a self-sufficient energy system that serves a discrete
geographic footprint, such as a college campus, hospital complex, business center, or neighborhood. Learn more about micro-
            grids here.
Calhoun stresses that selling in these targeted areas requires education, training, and some ‘out of the box’ thinking
to develop strategies for growth. To be successful propane marketers need to form partnerships with rental service, temporary
heat, pump and power and construction companies.

“Our opportunity is clear,” Calhoun says. “When energy is needed – no matter where or when – there is no better
and cleaner choice than propane-powered power generation.”■
