overseas contributed 20 percent of the overall donations offered to our March 11 Disaster
Relief Fund. We believe this is a major benefit of the international exchanges fostered by The
WFB. As a way of repaying the warm sympathy and support extended to Japan at the time,
JBF has endeavored to use the fund to support Buddhists providing help in disaster areas
as part of its social contribution activities. We also believe it is our responsibility to share the
issues involved in reconstruction activities with delegates from outside Japan and provide
opportunities for them to actually visit the affected areas, as a way of encouraging Buddhists
from all over the world to think of how they can provide humanitarian support in the future.
Given the historical background and active guiding role that traditional Buddhist schools
have played in Japan, it is important for us to communicate the importance of activities fostering
mutual understanding and cooperation among Buddhists both in Japan and throughout
the world. We believe that this is a good opportunity for demonstrating to fellow Buddhists
everywhere the existence of traditional Buddhism in Japan and make active contributions to
world peace. In accordance with the Buddha’s teachings on social harmony, we believe that
more concrete steps should be taken to create a society that respects each person’s life. We
must go beyond the confines of religion and join hands with many other segments of society
to demonstrate the Buddha’s teachings on social harmony to everyone in the world. Taking
into account a variety of viewpoints among fellow Buddhists in other countries and experts in
various fields, we must ask ourselves what our role is, and going forward, we can fulfill that
role through our activities.
In addition, exchanges between Buddhists youth from all over the world at the World
Fellowship of Buddhist Youth (WFBY) Conference held concurrently with the General Conference
of The WFB have always produced many promising individuals who are the generation of the
future.
We hope that the young people’s bonds of friendship based on an earnest desire for peace
will strengthen and lead to further development of human resources, and that information,
experience, and knowhow for more productive meetings will be passed on to the next generation.
